5 Fast Fashion Facts - The Tragic Truth
Fast Fashion. Who is paying the Cost?
We are addicted to shopping & the Earth is paying the price
- The world uses an estimated 80-100 billion pieces of clothing every year, a 400 percent increase from two decades ago, many of it fast fashion from Boohoo, H&M, ASOS and the biggest contributor, Shein, amongst others.
- The low prices should raise a red flag. People must start questioning how? The answer is simple, exploitation; mainly of women but also children who are forced to work long hours with unfair wages and basic workers rights. Big corporations like Nike, H&M & Zara play their part in this exploitation for their own profits.
- Plastic Waste. 60% of fabrics produced are plastic based polyester (which is made from fossil fuels). This cheap material sheds with each wash and dry , called micro-plastics. 1/2 Million tonnes are released into our oceans per year, the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles.
- 92 Million Tonnes of textile waste is generated per year. From clothes that do not fit anymore, items that have gone out of fashion, or even clothes that have never been worn, consumers discard enormous quantities of fashion items each year. BUT companies like Sweet Pea Preloved and other small Re-Sellers as well as clothing rental companies are making an impact & helping change how people choose to shop, buy shopping secondhand, choosing quality and becoming a more conscious shopper.
